Wildflowers of the Wheatbelt
The woodlands of the Wheatbelt have a greater diversity of plant species than the karri forests of the Southwest.
Over 980
species
have been recorded in the Shire of Merredin alone. Species of acacia and eucalypt make up the majority but also included is some 47 species of orchids and numerous species of hakea, grevillea, verticordia and other varieties of heath land plants.
The mosaic of habitats in the Wheatbelt ranging from open woodland, granite outcrops, sand plain country and extensive salt lake systems give rise to a great variety of flora and fauna species many now only confined to nature reserves and roadside verges in these habitats.
The northern shires are noted for the wreath flower which can be found on roadside verges in the Shires of Koorda and Dalwallinu.
The best times for wildflowers in this region are from mid July through to late October with different species putting on their displays over the season. Some orchid and wattle species flower as early as April and May.
